Manga

For those of you who love manga and/or aspire to be manga artists, Ustream.tv is a surprisingly good source for live channels of manga and doujinshi artists drawing at their desktops.

Unfortunately, you kind of have to search for them to find them, as they often will change channels that they’re broadcasting on. I think I’ve seen “yoshikadu” change channels 3 or 4 times in the past 2 years in fact. You could do a very general keyword search for “Japan” and sift through those. Needless to say the artists generally don’t tag their channels consistently, so it takes some time to find them. But it’s worth it to see the creation of such magnificent artwork.

Here are some channels I follow:

Again, these links are subject to change. Check them out when you get a chance. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to watch them live on the air.

February Thursday Night Manga Meetup

by Austin Otaku on February 19, 2010

Genshiken

I’m back! It has been a long time since I’ve added any posts, mainly due to work consuming so much of my time. But I managed to make it out to tonight’s Thursday Night Manga Meetup with the Austin Anime Meetup Group. Lots of cool people showed up tonight and shared their manga. A few aspiring manga-ka were also there, drawing and showing off their skills.

Be sure to join us next month, or show up to one of the anime nights scheduled between now and then.

There have been some rumors lately of a possible visit to the Austin area by manga-ka (manga artists) Konohana Sakuya, which is the working alias of Kouhei Nishino and Tsugumi Nishino. And if these rumors are true, the Japan-America Society of Greater Austin will be hosting them at their monthly cultural salon … possibly on [...]

Here are some pics from tonight’s Thursday Night Manga Meetup, which is an event held by the Austin Anime Meetup Group. In addition to some really great conversation about manga, anime, and Japanese cinema with the group, I decided to treat everyone to some okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza), delivered by Osaka Soul. So, first of all, [...]

The First 3 Months of Austin Otaku

August 12, 2009
Austin Otaku

I started AustinOtaku.com as a way to allay my own restlessness, living in the heart of Texas, far away from Tokyo or any of the three Japantowns (nihonmachi) in the U.S.. It’s one of the annoyances of adulthood that you have to settle into a job and worry about finances rather than being able to [...]
