The First 3 Months of Austin Otaku

Austin Otaku

by Austin Otaku on August 12, 2009

I started AustinOtaku.com as a way to allay my own restlessness, living in the heart of Texas, far away from Tokyo or any of the three Japantowns (nihonmachi) in the U.S.. It’s one of the annoyances of adulthood that you have to settle into a job and worry about finances rather than being able to just pick up and move.

I could’ve either complained about it and spent my time moping about being in such a hot, backwards part of the country or made the best of it. I chose the latter. I firmly believe what John Milton said:

“The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.”
–John Milton, Paradise Lost

And once I made that decision and started AustinOtaku.com, embarking on a mission to discover all of the ways a self-admitted Japanophile and otaku could plug in, I found there was a lot more to Austin than I thought. Here are some of the highlights of the first 3 months of AustinOtaku.com. Enjoy!

It’s great that you were able to find so much in TX. It’s always when you embark on something like this and really dig in the city where you live that you find places like these :-) Great video! I’m doing something of the same for NYC Finding so many places here that I wouldn’t find in my hometown of Akron Ohio!

I imagine you have a bunch of Japanese-related stuff throughout NYC. Have you been to Ninja Restaurant yet? I’d like to try it out if I ever come to the Big Apple. … Thanks for dropping by. Good luck with your site.

Nifty looking video you have there. Enjoyed it thoroughly. :) I love that photo of Captain Byakuya in Austin. So are you a Bleach fan? I enjoy Bleach, but this last story arc is taking forever, and they keep adding all of these side stories,UGH! :( They need to get this one wrapped up imho.
Muza-chan is a great blogger, and it looks like she’s always having fun.
I follow her,Shibuya246,Kimonobox,Danny Choo, and now you. I have all of your blogs on my main RSS feed page , on myYahoo Home Page.
Once I can get out of this financial dillema, I can get back to what I love doing best, and 1 day be able to visit Japan. I’d probably need a guide, (get lost easy) lol.
Keep up the great work.

Yeah, you could say I’m a Bleach fan. I’ll have to post pictures of my cube at work one day. LOL. … I agree with you on the side arcs. They have been quite annoying in the past, though I have to say I really enjoyed the last two episodes about the shinigami’s zanpakutou’s rebelling.

Best of luck in getting back on your feet financially. This economy has sucked for too long. Ganbatte ne!

Just wanted to say that I loved the video! This is actually the first time I’ve visited your blog, but I just wanted to say how great it is that no matter where you are in the world, it’s always possible to get your “otaku fix” if you look hard enough. ^_^
