User Poll: Subs or Dubs?

Austin Otaku

by Austin Otaku on June 29, 2009

I know what I prefer when I watch an anime, J-drama, or Japanese movie, but I’d like to hear what you prefer. So, how about it? Do you prefer animes, J-dramas, and movies in their original language with subtitles? Or do you prefer English (or whatever your language is) dubbed voice-overs? … Or does it even matter to you?

Slacking: It’s What I Do

Austin Otaku

by Austin Otaku on June 26, 2009

I apologize for the delay in putting up a new post. Work, that necessary but evil aspect of life, has kept me quite busy. I am currently working on a review of Austin Book’s manga section as well as a review of local plushie producer nottaTOY. Those reviews should be live this weekend.

In the meantime, enjoy this video from MUCC entitled “Libra”:

Updating My J-Pop and J-Rock Collection

Austin Otaku

by Austin Otaku on June 16, 2009

If you’re a fan of Japanese music here in the States, you face a more difficult challenge getting your fix than anime and manga fans face. There just isn’t a good, American-based distribution channel (that I’m aware of) for J-Rock or J-Pop. Amazon.com has a few major titles, even a few that you can download via their MP3 store. Surprisingly, ITunes has even fewer options, from what I’ve seen.

Frankly, I was getting frustrated with hearing great songs by artists like Bonnie Pink, High and Mighty Color, and Asian Kung-fu Generation on my Pandora channel and not being able to legally acquire the albums. Sure, I could get the MP3’s from one of the many torrent sites, but I really don’t like doing that unless there’s no other way. Fortunately, I found cdJapan, which offers DVD’s, animes, books, magazines, apparel and, most importantly, Japanese CD’s. Imagine my relief when I discovered that every CD title I could think of I found.

I quickly placed an order and expanded my personal CD library by a few albums. The titles I ordered were:

If you haven’t heard of High and Mighty Color, here is one of their live performances of “Pride.”

High And Mighty Color – Pride (Shibuya Ax Live) from Shigure 8D on Vimeo.

I received my shipment within a few days, which is amazing, because ordinarily I expect shipments from Japan to take a couple of weeks.

Overall, the experience was so positive I signed up for cdJapan’s affiliate program so I could advertise for them on AustinOtaku.

(As a side note: you should know that I don’t advertise for just anyone. I only advertise for companies or products that I use myself and strongly recommend. I encourage you to click on any of the banners on this site, not because of any very small compensation I’ll receive, but because of the value of the products and services offered by my advertisers.)

Another n00b moment: the Austin Japanese Meetup Group

June 14, 2009
Austin Otaku

The more I dig into the otaku and Japanophile culture here in Austin, the more I feel like a novice. Despite a couple of decades of reading Japanese literature and watching Japanese cinema, I find so many more people who know so much more than I do. Such was the case again this weekend as [...]

Gackt Performs “Kalmia” and “Cube” Live

June 8, 2009
Austin Otaku

When it comes to talented showmanship and range, I’d say very few performers come close to Gackt. This live performance of “Kalmia” (from his Rebirth album) and “Cube” (from the Kimi no tame ni dekiru koto album) really shows off his ability to entertain a crowd and displays his broad vocal range. Or as we [...]

Asahi Imports: Austin’s Own Konbini

June 7, 2009
Austin Otaku

Nestled between the Dragon’s Lair Comic Book Store and Turquoise Trading Post in a low-key strip mall along Burnet Road in Austin is a quaint, family-owned Japanese grocery store named Asahi Imports. It boasts, rightfully so, that it is the only Japanese grocery store in Austin, and it has been so since the late 1960’s. [...]

We Need a Hulu for Anime

June 6, 2009
Austin Otaku

Last week, FUNimation Entertainment attempted something I think it should’ve been doing all along — a simulcast of an anime with English subtitles in the US as it was being broadcast in Japan. Unfortunately, some opportunistic fansubbers found a copy of the anime on a public server and released it ahead of the broadcast in [...]

Gackt: Lust for Blood Live

June 2, 2009
Austin Otaku

Have you ever found a song that you could listen to over and over and never get tired of? That song for me is Gackt’s “Lust for Blood,” which is on his “Crescent” album.
The song, which is about lost love and the misery of repeating the same mistakes over and over, has incredible depth of [...]
